>> Tariffs raise prices and promote inefficiencies...and that is not arguable. << tariffs only raise prices if you buy foreign. it is a discretionary tax, which detractors often conveniently fail to point out. buy american and you don't have to pay the tax. also, tariffs help to raise wages. furthermore, yes, tariffs are a form of taxation. but you cannot look at it in isolation. true conservatives ala alan keyes and pat buchanan are in favor of lowering or even eliminating income taxes. so not only do wages strengthen, but you can lower the tax burden on individuals and businesses, offsetting the higher prices. as for efficiencies? like i said, america is not a corporation. we are a country. i'm sure it's more efficient and we could save money by outsourcing most of our national defense. i don't think you will find too many patriotic americans advocating that now will you? there is the proof that refutes your argument that efficiencies must always take precedence over national interest. now it simply becomes an argument of just how much protection is needed.
