For the sake of argument, let's say there is a theoretical basis for protecting domestic industry. So what? Congress by its nature can never implement that theory in any coherent fashion.

What actually, and inevitably, comes out of Congress are abortions like the steel protection bill which, as I pointed out, rewards a steel industry that buys it's raw materials abroad, while thousands of steel workers in American mines lose their jobs.

What comes out of Congress, is what the well connected, the well healed, the unscrupulous want. The political process CAN NOT HOPE to control the business of the country. And any attempt will inevitably do more harm than good to the very people you say you want to protect.

And THAT is why Buchanan's theories deserve to be consigned to the dust bin of history.
