Samsung SDI aims to capture 25 pct of world handset colour LCD market by 2003
AFX News Asia, 3/11/2002 11:49:00 PM

SEOUL, Mar 11, 2002 (AFX-Asia via COMTEX) -- Samsung SDI Co Ltd said it targets to capture 25 pct of the world handset colour LCD market by 2003, up from 18 pct in 2001.

"We will focus on the mobile handset display segment as our future growth engine with a vision of becoming a leading total mobile solution provider," the company's executive vice president of the LCD division Shim Im-soo said at a press briefing.

Shim said the company's newly developed UFB-LCD product, which combines the picture quality of the more expensive TFT-LCDs and the energy-saving features of STN-LCDs, will successfully attract 2.5G and 3G wireless users.

The new product is some 50 pct cheaper than TFT-LCDs and 30-40 pct more expensive than the low-end STN-LCDs, he said.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd plans to release a new handset equipped with the new UFB-LCD panel in April, he said, adding that other international handset makers including Nokia have showed a keen interest in the new product.

He also said that the company is considering building new production lines for LCD panels.
