i see. let's shoot down a "theory" because you claim it can never be implemented. i hate to break it to you, but it is not simply a "theory". the united states implemented a strongly protectionist policy for an entire century and we became the largest industrial superpower on earth. in 50 years we went from half the industrial capacity of the british empire to twice their capacity. britain tried free trade and was nearly starved into submission during both world wars. japan, germany, and s korea turned themselves into industrial superpowers after the wars via protectionism, and now china has taken the cue and is making themselves a global superpower via protectionism. it is the utopian, free trade, interventionist, liberals who are going to turn us into the next british empire.
