DBAB cuts 2002 PC unit forecast (AAPL, CPQ, DELL, GTW)

Analyst George Elling at Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown said he came away from a week with PC suppliers and original equipment manufacturers in Taiwan, Korea and Japan left with a "heightened level of caution" for the PC industry's near-term outlook.

He believes that strong notebook and motherboard data for January and February was a result of inventory replenishment following a strong holiday period, rather than a sustained uptrend in end market demand.

Elling cut his worldwide 2002 PC unit forecast to 127.9 million units from 131.7 million units, primarily due to a larger-than-anticipated second-quarter sequential unit decline.

He left his ratings and estimates for the PC stocks he covers -- Apple Computer (AAPL) , Dell Computer (DELL) , Compaq Computer (CPQ) and Gateway (GTW) -- unchanged
