Rite Aid Reports 9.2 Percent Same Store Sales Increase for February

CAMP HILL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 2002--Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE, PCX: RAD) today announced sales results for February.

Monthly Sales

For the five weeks ended March 2, 2002, same store sales rose 9.2 percent over the prior-year period. Pharmacy same store sales were up 12.0 percent, while front-end same store sales were up 4.9 percent.

Total drugstore sales for the five-week period rose 7.4 percent to $1.542 billion compared to $1.436 billion for the same period last year. Prescription revenue accounted for 62.5 percent of drugstore sales, and third party prescription revenue represented 92.2 percent of pharmacy sales.

Quarterly Sales

Same store sales for the quarter ended March 2, 2002 increased 8.1 percent over the prior-year quarter, reflecting an 11.3 percent increase in pharmacy comparable sales and a 3.6 percent increase in front end same-unit sales.

Total drugstore sales for the quarter increased 6.5 percent to $4.030 billion against $3.785 billion in the same quarter last year. Prescription revenue represented 60.5 percent of total drugstore sales, and third party prescription revenue was 92.1 percent of pharmacy sales.

Year End Sales

Same store sales for the 52-week period ended March 2, 2002, which represents Rite Aid's full 2002 fiscal year, increased 8.3 percent, consisting of an 11.4 percent pharmacy same store sales increase and a 3.6 percent increase in front-end same store sales.

Total drugstore sales for the 52 weeks ended March 2, 2002 gained 6.5 percent to $15.138 billion from $14.214 billion in last year's like period. Prescription revenue accounted for 61.4 percent of total drugstore sales, and third party prescription revenue was 92.0 percent of pharmacy sales.

Rite Aid Corporation is one of the nation's leading drugstore chains with annual revenues of more than $15 billion. On March 2, 2002 Rite Aid operated 3,497 stores compared to 3,648 stores in the like period a year ago.
