You're missing the point. We have coal that we can make into coke, we have iron ore. We can also recycle if we have to. But we still need the plants. Making sure we are strong (independant) trumps all other arguments.

The other things, like for example, mining in wherever land where the people are treated badly may be something to consider for the handwringing effect or good coffee table discussion, but...the bottom line is, we need steel plants for our national security. If we lose them all, we are placing ourselves in a potentially bad situation.

All the but..but... buts in the world isn't going to change that.

Would you like to see the US in that situation? If so why?

What good purpose does it serve our country?

Keep in mind that I do agree that overall freetrade is good, but IMO it's NOT an across the table thing. There are other factors to consider than just economics. This isn't a perfect world, and that limits how far we can take things.
