Yes, I like this about Will as well, though I often disagree with the ferocity of his positions. it could well be the shifting of my own positions over the last six months that I'm noticing.

On the Academy, I think what people see is more of a cohort effect than something particular to academic life itself. That is, the majority of academics in the US were born during the baby boom and came of age during the Viet Nam war, so their political leanings were profoundly effected by this.

I don't believe that an academic life necessarily leads to pacifism or an anti-government stance. I think of the academic training received by now-infamous suicide terrorists like Atta, for instance.
