Rah-Rah for the Fighting Whities
P.C. do-gooders at the University of Northern Colorado who object to Indian sports mascots tried to insult white people by naming their basketball team "The Fighting Whities" - but their scheme has backfired.
Somebody named Solomon Little Owl, taxpayer-supported director of Native American Student Services at UNC (you can bet the school has no director of White Student Services), was behind the intramural team's nickname, the Greeley Tribune reported Sunday.
"The message is, let's do something that will let people see the other side of what it's like to be a mascot," said Mr. Owl. "I am really offended by this mascot issue, and I hope the people that support the Eaton [a nearby town] mascot will get offended by this."
But it turns out that some people exist not for the sake of taking offense. Here are reader responses posted on the Tribune's Web site:
* "Love it! My husband and son (and me too) are honored to finally
be named as the treasured mascot for something, anything. What a treat!"
* "Help me out here, why am I supposed to be offended? If anything,
it points out that squawking about mascots is another made-up greivance."
* "As a white Southern lady, I am flattered, not offended by this
new mascot. Although I warn you, I want the Fighting Whites of UNC to be as successful in their college division as the Florida State Seminoles are in the ACC."
* "What? No white mascots? Then explain the Notre Dame Fighting
Irish, Dallas Cowboys, University of Southwestern Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. Or how about these? "Norsemen - N. Kentucky Flying Dutchmen - Hope College, MI Britons - Albion College Highlanders (Scots tribe) - U Cal Riverside Gaels - Iona "My point is, I don't give this stuff a second thought. I'm certainly not OFFENDED, and I devote my free time to much more notable endeavors. "I say, 'get a life'. All that extra free time and the obvious $$$ being spent on this ridiculous posturing could be going towards tribal concerns such as improved housing, nutrition, and substance abuse programs."
* "As a white male I'm not offended, I'm honored that they are doing
this; it isn't often that white males get any good news. How does one get one of their jerseys?"
The team's shirts, by the way, depict a white man in a suit above the slogan "Every thang's gonna be all white!"
