Hewlett-Packard Unveils New Servers With Intel's Xeon Chips

The chips are priced between $1,177 and $3,692.

(So much for Dan3's argument that Xeon ASPs are being commoditized...)

Hewlett-Packard Co . unveiled a new line of servers based on chips from Intel Corp.

H-P (HWP) said Tuesday that three of the new servers, the tc6100, tc7100, and rc7100, have Intel's Xeon processor. The servers, which will have up to four Xeon chips, list at prices from $4,400 to $8,470 and will be available by mid- May, H-P said.

The other servers, the tc2110, tc3100 and tc4100, use Intel Pentium chips. They retail between $1,100 and $2,600 and will be available by mid-April. All servers can run on both the Windows and Linux operating systems.

H-P unveiled the servers, and other new products at CeBIT, a huge information- technology trade show, in Hanover, Germany .

The Palo Alto , Calif. , company also unveiled products designed to enable users to print, copy, fax and digitally send documents over the Internet.

For consumers, H-P unveiled the HP Photosmart 812 digital camera. At the touch of a button, users can distribute images across the Internet, H-P said.

The company also released CD and DVD drives, which allow customers to create CDs and DVDs containing video, images, music and data.

Also at CeBit, Intel (INTC), Santa Clara, Calif. , unveiled a new Xeon chip at 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 gigahertz with improved cache, a special memory subsystem.

"Adding a number of performance-boosting features, such as three levels of integrated cache will advance the capabilities of Intel-based, multiprocessing servers," Mike Fister, senior vice president and general manager of the Intel Enterprise Platforms Group, said in a written statement. The expanded cache allows the chip to access frequently used data more quickly.

The chips are priced between $1,177 and $3,692.
