I changed my view on the death penalty after the execution of Carla Faye Tucker. Nothing was gained by her execution and from what I had read she was making a contribution within the prison system. I just don't like commutation of sentences being in the hands of politicians. We had a particularly onerous situation in my state when Pope John Paul visited....Gov. Carnahan commuted the death penalty of a murderer to coincide with the Pope's visit. It was a particularly heinous crime. And it was clearly done for political expediency as it was an election year...him courting the Catholic vote. So if we can't rely on politicians to show mercy when appropriate and merciless when not....I say no death penalty.
