I live in South East Alaska about a thousand miles from the Arctic Ocean where, I believe, the natives hunt whales. We have them here, but they are watched, not hunted. It is great fun, by the way. I've seen a pod of Humpbacks foraging up by North Shelter Pass in the midst of hundreds of boats. The boats didn't bother the whales at all, so far as I could tell. I've never seen anybody harass a whale either. Most people are just glad to see one.

Subsistence hunting is a huge issue in Alaska. Very hot. I'll check tomorrow, and if you send me a PM with your address I'll send you a booklet on the subsistence policy.

I believe it is politically incorrect to eat marine mammals. When I was a kid they showed movies about whaling in school, not as a pejorative, but simply for education. It is not pretty.
