IDC raises 2002 PC sales forecast (DELL, CPQ, GTW, AAPL)

PC industry consultant and researcher IDC overnight raised its 2002 growth forecast for worldwide PC shipments to 3 percent from an earlier expectation for a 1.8 percent growth for the year. "Retail sales in the United States and growing demand in Western Europe were key factors in revising the numbers," IDC said. Shipments are expected to decline in the first quarter over the year-ago period and the market is seen growing close to 10 percent in the third and fourth quarters. PC makers include Dell Computer (DELL) , Compaq (CPQ) and Apple Computer (AAPL) . How sales volumes will look is another matter amid pricing pressure in the industry.
