A Nice Story. My husband often works late and so is still there when the cleaning people arrive. The person who does his office is a little Hispanic woman who speaks no English. He speaks only present tense 25 year old college Spanish, but he always asks her how she is, and about her family. He has mentioned to me how nice she is before and that they have a sort of routine he enjoys. A few weeks ago, he was staying late and she came in with a small box which she handed to him. Inside was a really beautiful, white hand-crocheted small tablecloth. He has no idea why she did this-- his Spanish didn't extend that far-- but he came home in the best mood, just overwhelmed that she would make something and give it to him. It never occurred to Dan that he is the president of the company, that his efforts to speak her language, and his interest in her as a person, must have seemed a great kindness to her, also. I think they are both wonderful. Then there is the cynical side of me that wonders if she is just buttering him up to ask for a raise. Or free tickets for 23 relatives to fly here from Mexico.
