he proposed legislation that expedited a few police powers, and did so with legislative authority, when the matter involved alleged terrorism.
Aye, and there's the rub - alleged terrorism. According to reports in even relatively RW media here, an allegation of terrorism - or association with some - is what is presumably behind disappearances which amount to detention without trial, representation or appeal. Nor are such arrests even answerable.
I'm short on time but do a search and you'll see them.
So who defines an 'enemy of the state', is it someone Ashcroft decides is (or might be ) evil? [Maybe not a Pentecostalist? <wry g>]
Plus the G.B. detentions, and the actions pre-9/11... not a fit man to be able to act unhindered.

Bush. Does not seem intelligent, well-informed, or more than averagely competent - and given the coaching and resources this argues for limited ability. His mannerisms I could care less about. Running a baseball team well enough to sell it at a profit (in an age when media valuations soared) is not the best qualification for POTUS, and if this is the best defence you can muster...
Meanwhile, smug. If he cares about people from outside his bracket - moneyed sons of privilege, the kind I thought you meant to get rid of with the Revolution - it shows not. His policies are designed to their good.
Personal tolerance (electoral appeal in mind? hmm) I rank with "some of my best friends are Jews" comments, heard the NIxon tapes recently? He even had a Jewish campaign chief. He shows no signs of moving any further beyond narrow-minded Conservatism than is concordant with minimising electoral appeal losses.
My views on capitalism... clue, I'm on SI. Check the profile. I despise the part of the class system which teaches that by right of birth one man is better than another. What, are you a monarchist? Bush exemplifies this stratification in his attitudes. And he's only pro-market as far as it helps his golf, oil and Tx buddies - or his vote - notice attitudes to ANWR, steel, Enron, who got helped by tax cuts... he's in it for what he can get and what he can do for his kind of people.

Your attitude to me is duly noted, and understood.
I wish I could be so complimentary in return.
