Can scrap steel be used to make "alloy steel"? Scrap steel is much easier to fabricate and create alloys than iron ore. Iron ore is a mixture of rust dirt and rocks and must be heated with an external fire (usually coke) to a high temperature to melt out the iron. scrap is nearly pure iron and rust. It can be subjected to an electric current and it is pure enough to pass the current with a lot of resistance that causes heat which melts out the iron. The total amount of energy used is much less and the resulting melt is cleaner and easier to make into an accurate alloy. TP
