Actually, I said it was reasonable to have objections to the enabling legislation, I merely objected to putting it all on Ashcroft, and to so far ignoring the other side of the coin as to take it as automatically nefarious.
I like Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Wolfowitz. In my mind, he puts them together, he takes the credit. I think that Powell has a lot of clout, he is an old Washington hand, and knows people throughout the government and interfacing groups. Rice has done a stint in Washington, and has some contacts. Mainly, though, Bush holds her in high esteem, and listens to her a lot. I think that Powell and Rice have had a lot of input on the course of the year, even if they do not control the main trajectory.
The United States never made a concerted attack on inherited privilege, although the meritocratic element has been strong, culturally. Of course I prefer merit. But I do not think that despoiling people of their wealth, or of their ability to convey it to their heirs, is right either. I do not consider it possible to have a capitalist system and not have classes. Capitalism makes them more fluid, and that is good. I would rather have straightforward classes than socialist lies, while apparatchiks rig the system in their favor, and the favor of their children. I am not a fan of nepotism. I just think that if someone wants to hire a relative, that is his business.
I am glad to know you are more moderate. Of course, I take your word....... |
