Avanex to Display Expanded Portfolio of Subsystem and Modular Optical Solutions During OFC 2002

FREMONT, Calif., Mar 13, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX), the global provider of photonic processors that enable next-generation performance for optical communications networks, will display an expanded portfolio of modular and subsystem products and technology solutions during the Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) conference at the Anaheim, Calif., Convention Center March 17-22.
Avanex will be in Booth #1711, Hall H.

The focal point of Avanex's display will be a live demonstration of wavelength connectivity and routing featuring Avanex's new PowerRouter(TM) Reconfigurable Optical Wavelength Router. The PowerRouter(TM) offers wavelength-selective all-optical channel routing with built-in dynamic channel equalization capability. It is fully software reconfigurable for any wavelength combination. The PowerRouter(TM) is ideal for metro applications, where it can eliminate the need for expensive optical-electrical-optical signal conversions as it drops and adds signals and maintains channel balanced channel power levels.

In addition to its PowerRouter(TM), Avanex also will display a range of active, passive and reconfigurable photonic processors for wavelength grouping, multiplexing and transport, including its newly introduced PowerLeveler(TM) Dynamic Gain Equalizer, interleaver-based PowerMux(TM) NxG Wavelength Channel Processor, and PowerShaper(TM) FDS Dispersion Compensation Processor.

"Avanex's emphasis on devising solutions that reduce total network costs will be clearly evident at OFC," Paul Engle, Avanex president and CEO, said. "Our recent product development initiatives and acquisitions have focused on modular optical product designs that ensure future upgradeability and flexibility, and on developing optical subsystems that incorporate higher levels of integration. Visitors to our booth who are already familiar with our hallmark photonic processors for long-haul applications will also see the wide range and flexibility of the low-channel-count, low-cost offerings for metro and access networks."

Here is a capsule description of Avanex's new product offerings to be at OFC:

* PowerMux(TM) NxG (Interleaver) Wavelength Channel Processor. An
interlever-based multiplexer/demultiplexer available at channel spacings
from 400 to 25 GHz that bridges the gap between legacy and next-
generation network architectures. The PowerMux NxG delivers high
performance at low cost and features built-in dispersion compensation
and improved thermal stability.
* PowerLeveler(TM) Dynamic Gain Equalizer. The PowerLeveler, based on a
proprietary liquid crystal and diffraction grating technology platform,
is software-adjustable to enable high resolution dynamic equalization
and channel blocking functionality in wavelength transport and add/drop
applications. It enables longer transmission spans in long-haul
applications and reduces the need for costly optical-electrical-optical
conversions in metro applications.
* PowerShaper(TM) FDS Dispersion Compensation Processor. Avanex's newest
PowerShaper family solution fully compensates for chromatic dispersion
and slope dispersion at 10Gpbs transmission rates. Based on a
proprietary Filter Dispersion Synthesis (FDS) technology, the
PowerShaper FDS can be easily designed to meet the dispersion and slope
characteristics for any fiber type and distance. Its compact size and
full slope matching capability give it clear advantages over competing
technologies.
* PowerWatcher(TM) Optical Signal Analyzer. The PowerWatcher offers
optical performance monitoring by channel of power levels, signal-to-
noise ratios and wavelength centering.

The Avanex display also will include a selection of Avanex's well- established solutions for increasing network performance, including:

* PowerMux(TM) NxG (Grating) Wavelength Channel Processor. Based on
Avanex's proprietary holographic surface grating technology, the
PowerMux(TM) NxG (Grating) is available from 8 to 44 channels at 100 GHz
channel spacing and from 4 to 22 channels at 200 GHz spacing. It is a
low-cost solution for high-channel-count applications
* PowerShaper(TM) VIPA Tunable Dispersion Compensation Processor.
Avanex's tunable DCM solution is primarily focused on 40 Gbps
applications and selected 10 Gbps applications which require wide
dispersion tuning ranges (up to 1500 ps/nm) and low group delay ripple.
* PowerExchanger Smart OADM, which offers add/drop functionality with
integrated optical power level management to ensure channel balancing.
This type of OADM with power level control flexibility is an
increasingly popular solution for metro core transport network
applications.
* The PowerExpress(TM) Metro Amplifier Module, which is capable of bi- or
uni-directional application and can be integrated with built-in
dispersion management.
* PowerFilter(TM) Band Separator, a thin-film filter WDM building block
with advanced 4 skip 0 / 4 skip 1 100 GHz channel capability designed to
meet metro band add/drop applications.
* PowerFilter(TM) Channel Separator, a full range of thin-film filter WDM
building blocks offering wavelength multiplexing and demultiplexing at
channel spacings from 50 GHz to coarse WDM applications.
