Problem: Apparently my box has been infected with some sort of "Evilbot" type software. Upon starting the computer up, I can see a lot of traffic through a Linksys cable router that seems to be originating from my box as Windows 98 loads.

Following the proposed format:

1. OS is Win 98
2. Browser is MSIE6.0 and NN4.7

3. briefly describe the problem:

In addition seeing my computer annunciate itself to someone or other, there is another peculiar aspect to this virus. Oftentimes, the computer will open multiple iterations of Windows Help, or whatever "Help" is associated with a program I open. For instance Netscape Messenger or Zone Alarm both immediately opened help screens when I went to open them. Very strange stuff.

4. how long has it been happening?

Several weeks. What I did yesterday was to install a Linksys Cable Router in order to try to isolate my system from the Net. I just ran Norton Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-virus scans with latest updates. What I discovered is that Norton AV and AVG anti-virus did not pick up whatever script has been installed on my box. So, I'm still infected.

5. what are you doing when the prob occurs?

I've reinstalled Windows 98, and it's cleared things up for about 48 hours, then the gremlin returns.

6. any error messages accompanying the problem? (copying the exact message is great!)

No, no error messages appear.

7. what have you tried so far to remedy the problem?

Reinstalled Windows 98, installed Linksys Cable Router/Hardware Firewall, run anti-virus scans.

Any help appreciated.

[[Note: This appears to me to be similar in nature to the DDOS attacks that Steve Gibson describes here:
