The reaction to the famous words among the posters here has always amazed me. I realize that people consider them vulgar and ill mannered. They are typically used to accentuate a personal dig and usually are effective at adding some theatrical flare. Very rarely are such posts meaningful beyond simply making it apparent that one poster wishes to annoy someone or is feeling annoyed by another.

The statement "I don't like you," or "I am annoyed by you," would substantially accomplish no more or less than most of the flaming vulgarities and insults hurled around here. This, however, carries far less glitz and may even go unnoticed, or be given little regard by most.

Flaming epithets are meant to engender discomfort, annoyance, and are tossed by someone feeling a bit mean spirited for a moment. They rarely amount to more than a challenge to a head butting contest. Completely harmless if you ask me, except for people who feel a particular loyalty to established conventions of language use.

Some of the posters, on the other hand, are quite adept at scoping the personal frailties of those who may disagree with them and casting cruel and personal remarks that can be quite painful, while having little to do with the topic under review; even undermining the foundation of discussion to the point where progress is halted.

Personally, I think we spend too much time policing particular words.
