France Telecom chooses Alcatel for new service to residential Internet users

France Telecom Internet Call Waiting service is based on Alcatel's 5020 Softswitch and
Alcatel Open Service Platform for IN applications

Hanover, March 13, 2002 - Alcatel (Paris : CGEP.PA and NYSE : ALA), leader in voice,
packet and mobile technologies, announces that it has signed a contract to provide France
Telecom with a network solution to enable the operator to launch its Internet Call Waiting
service (ICW) for residential customers throughout France. This next-generation multimedia
solution is based on the combination of the Alcatel 5020 Softswitch and Alcatel IN solutions
running on OSP (Open Service Platform) for network applications.

The ICW service allows Internet surfers, connected to France Telecom's PSTN or ISDN
network, to be notified about an incoming call and to access the call either on their telephone
line or by forwarding it to a second line, or having it delivered to their computer using Voice
over IP or diverted to their unified messaging system.

For Ludwig De Maeyer, Alcatel's president for Voice Network activities, "Alcatel's Softswitch
and OSP based network applications are major components of our next-generation network
portfolio, enabling service providers to offer new services for both existing voice networks and
emerging next-generation integrated voice and data networks."

The Alcatel 5020 Softswitch is a carrier-class, scalable and flexible platform enabling
advanced NGN applications and services thanks to its open Application Programming
Interface (called OPSI - Open Call API). The Alcatel OSP Network Applications provides IN
solutions which allows service providers and third-parties to develop services on top of the
Alcatel 5020 Softswitch.
