Alcatel Introduces High Density Multiservice Media Gateway

Addressing service providers' requirements to preserve and expand profitability, the 7670 RSP
MG sets the pace for next generation network evolution

Paris, March 11, 2002 - A leader in voice, packet and mobile technologies, Alcatel (Paris:
CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today unveiled the latest addition to its best-of-breed next
generation network (NGN) product portfolio. Built on the Alcatel 7670 Routing Switch Platform
(RSP), the new Alcatel 7670 RSP Media Gateway (MG) is designed for both public switched
telephone networks (PSTN) and mobile networks. This new voice over packet (VoP) media
gateway is currently being evaluated by more than 15 established carriers worldwide.

Alcatel's NGN product suite, including the Alcatel 5000/5020 softswitches and associated
media gateways, is based on open standards to meet the needs of interexchange carriers,
incumbent local exchange carriers, competitive local exchange carriers, and wireless
networks. Bringing the best of multiservice, multiprotocol networking to next generation
networks, the Alcatel 7670 RSP MG is a feature rich platform that allows carriers to evolve their
network infrastructure in stride with their business while preserving the quality of voice services
that still account for the bulk of revenues.

"Incumbent telcos around the world have enormous voice service revenues and infrastructure
investments to protect yet they are nearing a time when they must migrate to the next
generation of voice technology based on packet networks," said Kevin Mitchell, directing
analyst, Infonetics Research. "The 7670 RSP Media Gateway, based on the Alcatel's
multiservice, multiprotocol platform, offers these carriers an opportunity to start their migration
at their own pace."

With absolute QoS-based VoP, the Alcatel 7670 RSP MG ensures service continuity critical to
successful NGN evolution by protecting the quality and integrity of voice services during
network evolution. By collapsing disparate networks onto a unified infrastructure and allowing
carriers to phase their NGN evolution to match new revenue opportunities, the multiservice
7670 RSP MG is a natural fit for operators eager to take control of their bottom line by
reducing operating and capital costs. Investment protection of existing and future
infrastructure deployments is assured through standard-based interoperability with softswitches,
a multiprotocol architecture, and migration flexibility.

"As a world leader in voice, data and mobile networking technology, Alcatel is ideally
positioned to lead the industry through the next phase of network convergence," said Michel
Rahier, president of Alcatel's Broadband Network activities. "With the Alcatel 7670 RSP MG,
our customers can migrate their voice traffic on a proven platform that guarantees service
continuity and offers opportunities for additional revenue. From both a business and
technology perspective, that's a home run combination."
