Putnam to vote for H-P/Compaq merger (HWP, CPQ)

Putnam Investment Mangement, Hewlett-Packard's [s:hwp] fifth-largest investor with about 2.5 percent of the company at the end of December, said it will vote its shares in favor of H-P's acquisition of Compaq (CPQ) .

"We believe the merger enhances the combined companies' strategic and competitive positions and offers financial benefits to shareholders," Boston-baed Putnam said in a statement. "Therefore, we believe long-term shareholder value will be enhanced as a result of the combination."

Michael Capellas, Compaq's chief executive, had said several months ago that Putnam supported the merger, but Putnam wouldn't confirm its endorsement. Shares of H-P fell 45 cents to close at $20.11 on the Big Board. Shares of Compaq fell 12 cents to close at $11.
