In 1997, there were almost 18,000 gun suicides, compared to roughly 13,000 gun homicides. (This is the last year for which statistics are currently available.) Total = 31,000 deaths.

Automobile death are losely given as 40,000 per year.

It's hard to get clear statistics but it would seem that these are both far larger than they should be. I believe Japaneese gun deaths to be less than 200 per year.
