The conservative says "This is a problem that can't be solved". The liberal say's "Lets find a way to solve the problem".

Over time the problem of untracable guns in crooks hands will be solved by eihter catching the crooks or waiting for them to die with uncrooked offspring. I think the answer is a clear gun possesion policy in which the location of the gun is transparent, but the right to possess in good faith is maintained. The percentage of untraced guns in bad hands will diminish to the level of very bad people who will find ways to do bad things anyway. These people will be dealt with as needed.

As a corolary I think the second amendment call for a responsible militia should be enhanced to ensure that a military coup is not likely. The National Guard could provide the proper framework with a bit more automity to the governors.
