We didn't need any authorizations by the UN, any more than we've needed them this time.
You raise a damned fine point. Here are some more:
1. Before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, with hundreds of thousands of infantry massing on the border, why on earth did our our ambassador in Baghdad, April Glaspie, state, and I quote verbatim, that "The United States has no opinion on your border dispute with Kuwait." That is as close to a green light as it gets. I have always wondered about that.
2. Why did the United States target a helpless Iraqi infantry forced at gunpoint and with threats of murder against families, and allow those truly loyal to Saddam, the Republican Guards, to largely escape?
3. Why the cease-fire?
4. Why did the United States encourage both the Shiites in the south and the Kurds in the north to attempt an overthrow, promising tactical support, and then leave them to be massacred by Iraqi helicopters spraying poison gas?
These questions have never been answered satisfactorily, and I would like to know why. |
