<<This is good publicity, but I wonder how many FOG's would be sold if this system ramps up.>>
<<"The demand for a new PTC solution is being driven by the fact that railway managers need to have precise, real-time information regarding the POSITION and motion OF EVERY ONE of the more than 20,000 locomotives and 550,000 freight and passenger cars in service in North America,">>
Hi, geoffrey. I'm checking in from vacation for a few minutes.
The initial market here must be AT LEAST 20,000 FOGs for the North American market, as, even though a train might have three locomotives, tomorrow those three locomotives might each be on different trains, so I'm sure every locomotive would have one for starters.
But, the PR mentions POSITION as well as motion - and it isn't talking about just the position of the TRAIN, but the position of the cars as well. What happens when cars are on sidetracks waiting, or at factories loading, or coupled to a train that doesn't have the system yet?
And, of course, this only talks about the North American market, whereas Europe and Asia make heavy use of trains too. |
