US equities ended Thursday's session mixed, with blue chips posting small gains while technology stocks slipped into negative territory.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 15.29 higher to 10,517.14 while the S&P 500 index shed 1.05 to 1,153.03. The Nasdaq Composite fell 7.90 to 1,854.13.

The overall market tone was negative, with decliners outpacing advancers on the New York Stock Exchange three to two. Volume was subdued with 1.2bn trades on the NYSE ahead of Friday's triple witching - the simultaneous expiration of options, stocks and futures contracts.

"There's no conviction out there. The market is trying to find a level that it can trade in for a while. It needs to establish a base before it can go to the next level," said Stephen Carl, head of US equity trading at The Williams Capital Group.

Old economy stocks showed some strength with Caterpillar up 2.2 per cent to $58.73 after AG Edwards upgraded the stock.

Eastman Kodak gained 4.4 per cent to $32.37 after the photography group reaffirmed its first quarter and full-year earnings targets.
