I think it's two things. One is that they think the things he said about another poster were no more awful than those that are said rather routinely on SI. As I recall, some of the problem words were 'wackjob,' 'scuzzball,' and 'nancyboy.'

The other is that JLA's post was, in their opinion (and mine) very much less a violation than a post (or posts) associated with it by another poster that was neither removed nor reacted to by suspension.

There is the suspicion that a possible new threat of a lawsuit was an aspect of the defense against being suspended for certain posts, though revealing personal information is a clear no no. I personally hope that had nothing to do with it. I'm in the dark.

If the above sentence is incoherent, there must be some reason for that. What it is, I don't know. I'm in the dark.
