Elmer, Intel investors,

More on that new IBM new Xeon based server, from IBM's website. Some of the RAS features follow, some of which are a first in this class server. My words mostly, plus some cut and paste from IBM's website. Check it out for all the details. Windows 2000 Server, 2000 Advanced Server and Red Hat Linux appear to be key operating systems that'll run on it most. Some of the RAS features:

- Memory mirroring, like RAID but at the main memory level.

- Chipkill, which is not new, and something similar that is new called Memory ProteXion™ similar to “hot-spare on DIMM” that uses spare bits for redundancy that re-route data around a failed chip on a DIMM in the event of a failure.

- Hot-add and hot-swap PCI and PCI-X adapters on the fly. Not new and becoming standard.

- Hot add of hard drives. Not new and becoming standard.

- "Self healing memory" and what IBM calls "complete n+1 redundancy" preventing a power supply or fan from taking the system down.

- More stuff like what they call "Light Path Diagnostics™, Predictive Failure Analysis® and remote management capability.

The server even comes with 32 MB of L4 cache per 4-way.

These servers are indeed a major step up for Intel servers, both in terms of performance and reliability, and low cost, and should be a very hot product, IMO.
