HK PCCW Jazzes Up Web Portal To Lure, Retain Subscribers
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
HONG KONG -- Telecommunications behemoth Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. (PCW) said Thursday it added new international content to its Internet broadband portal to increase its appeal to subscribers.
PCCW's now.com.hk internet portal added BBC World, Bloomberg Television, Fashion TV, MTV and Nickelodeon to its services at no additional cost on top of the HK$30 monthly fee paid by subscribers. The company didn't say what it paid to subscribe to the new content.
The move comes nearly three months after PCCW renegotiated a 10-year content contract with television production company Trans World International at a cost of up to US$108.4 million, to rein in costly ambitions of girding the globe to focus on Asian audiences.
"As our subscriber base grows steadily, the new international channels will meet the various programming needs of every member of the family," said Internet Services Marketing Manager Monita Leung in a statement.
PCCW spokeswoman Evelyn Leung declined to provide details on growth in now.com.hk subscriber numbers, saying the company will release its 2001 earnings figures on March 20.
"We are satisfied with the favorable response since the service launch last September," she said.
