I looked up the book and the reviews and they are almost all the same, as if the review was sent out by the NRA. The mainstream press takes a more balanced view. theatlantic.com But Bellesiles's analysis of the militia is persuasive, and supports his assertion that after the War of 1812 there was a sharp decline in the ownership of weapons for self-defense. nytimes.com "But if America's gun culture is a recent development, then gun deaths today, as the N.R.A. argues, are not the price we pay for our heritage -- because there is no such heritage." It would seem this book is a particular sore spot with the NRA. In a typical report to Congress, the secretary of war complained in 1838 that "when mustered, a majority of (the militia) are armed with walking canes, fowling pieces, or unserviceable muskets." TP
