Although I know nothing about the intermediate code that .NET is using, I suspect it will be similar to Java intermediate code, if for no other reason C# is very similar to Java. And that would mean that a stack-based machine would be more efficient than a VLIW machine like Transmeta uses. A better choice would be PTSC, not Transmeta. But, if you stick with in order execution, don't have a lot of pipeline stages and don't have a sophisticated FPU, processors aren't all that difficult to design. The real problem is the design of the graphics processor. This is the really difficult part. And given Microsoft's track record on delivering bug-free products, makes me really dubious that they can actually deliver on their desires...
