***World-wide sales of all semiconductors were $139 billion last year yet Intel has a market capitalization of $221 billion. Are we missing something? Total industry world-wide sales of semi-equipment last year were $28 billion, yet Applied Materials market cap is $41 billion.

Of course, anyone who is going to own a computer probably already does and market growth may come as much from the odd one computer family graduating to a second computer as anything else. In our view, the industry is now quite mature and must necessarily be priced for lower growth rates in the future. Intel now sells for 8.3 times its own sales, a monumental valuation for a mature company. How can we be so sure the super growth for Intel has ended? For one thing, sales were up only 1% from 1998 to 2001.***
