Here's why: *Fundamental Characteristics Month Ending 2/28/2002 Total Market Value ($) 12.4 trillion Mean Market Value ($) 2,082 million Median Market Value ($) 120.7 million Weighted Average Market Value ($) 83,132 million Largest Company's Market Value ($) 382.2 billion Smallest Company's Market Value ($) under 1 million Median Share Price $9.56 P/E Ratio 33.3 Price/Book 6.08 Current Yield 1.35%* wilshire.com So, this mess has "book value" of two trillion dollars or so. Deduct a trillion at least for goodwill, intangible assets and other fluff that banks are unlikely to take as payment. Add debt hidden off balance sheets and in SPE's - probably hundreds of billions. Do the math.
