Although he is right in saying the colonists preferred
torches to muskets in fighting Indians--burning crops to risking battle

He is right in saying the militia was not well trained and
that Americans relied on volunteers, conscripts, or
regulars to do much of their serious fighting

Bellesiles is right in saying the militia was never completely armed.


I think he slams the quality of writing and organisation.

I haven't seen it in many reviews, but I recall reading about the help of the French in the Revolutionary War including a large number of arms from Louis XIV. This would indicate that the colonists were not particularly well armed, certainly not universally. I hope that more serious research is performed on this subject.
