I wouldn't mind paying the extra for high speed data access. The main problem I have is that there is no access to ANY wireless from my home, because of the hilly terrain and the rural area, where there aren't enough subscribers to encourage Verizon to provide even IS-95.

It is indeed bizarre that in order to use my wireless phone, I have to travel down the road about six miles in order to get in range of the nearest antenna. Being in a rural area, I am also forced to use a local ISP to reach the Internet. If I had wireless access to the Internet, I could eliminate the local ISP, making the additional wireless charge affordable. But it's all academic until they provide some service.
