May I suggest that they are operating from guilt. Andrea Yates was clearly crying out for help and her family was not able to give her the help she needed. It is impossible for most families to give the mentally ill person help because they are too closely involved with the individual. It takes objective, professionals to guide the mind of a schizophrenic. It's impossible for untrained family members to bandaid the situation and expect anything but failure.

SOme religious people believe that all one needs to cure mental illness is to read the Bible and have faith in God. I walked out of a service once where the Pastor preached that no one needed shrinks and prescription drugs for mental illness..........all you need is your faith....or so he said. I sometimes wonderif Andrea had a Pastor that felt that same way.................it is so scary.

Somehow I think that some of the blame for the death of those five children belongs on the shoulders of religious fundamentalists. I don't have any prroof, but I have heard stories of how she was influenced by her church. From her apparent thought processes about Satan getting a hold of her kids, I think that she probably had a religious background. It sounds like a southern, evangelical Christian philosophy to me...........which would include the lack of birth control.

Our society needs to learn to intercept the Andrea Yates's and get them real help.
