"When the "established" and "respectable" Islamic leaders utter even one word of outrage against the September 11 criminals, we will know we have made some small progress for the good of the civilized world."

Now that would be progress...

Will that be accomplished by, say, a campaign of mini-nukes making swiss cheese under the Middle East?

No, and that's the issue that you disagree with. Excessive force produces the reverse, causes easy justification by the self-appointed leaders who make their careers whipping up anti-American mobs.

You can't just assume killing all mobs everywhere will create a Pax Americana we can live with. It produces rationale for insane violence, that cannot be squelched by vaporizing still more. Even if you somehow morally justified that, you can't find them all, we would always be under threat of WMDs, there are too many of those who will take up that role, and the reputation of the US will be of a mass-murder, not self-defense.

There is a difference between the two.
