I have another idea. Banishment. Why not take all death row inmates, and those serving life with out parole, and turn them loose on some deserted island, or an island inhabited by the people like the tree dwellers of Borneo. I understand that these people still practice cannibalism, so it would be a caveman type of existence if they managed to survive at all. To me, this would be a far worse punishment than a jail cell, and cheaper for the taxpayers as well.
