Unfortunately, I believe you have succumbed to the common misperception that Islam itself is evil. I believe that if you read certain isolated portions of the Bible and did not take it as a whole, you would come to a similar conclusion.
Ideas that Christians take for granted are viewed as extreme by others. The Christian excuse for plundering the New World was that they needed to convert the heathen. Why? Because if you died without accepting the one and only Jesus Christ as your savior, you were condemned to a terrible and eternal hell. This tenet was used to justify all manner of cruelty, murder, and subjugation. Viewed by an outsider, Christianity can appear to be a, well, evil religion.
If you'd really like to learn more about Islam, I'd suggest the following site as a start. I am not a Muslim, nor a religious scholar, but I try to get at least a basic understanding of people and their ways, especially when they affect our lives so profoundly. I think that you will find that there are many people in the world who have corrupted the Islamic faith to fit their own needs and hateful beliefs. Probably as many as have done likewise with Christianity.
