Well, there are some examples here and know of Christian 'religions' being distorted by 'evildoers'.
1) Antiabortion murderers. People who kill pro-choice doctors, blow up clinics, harass and threaten in the name of Jesus Christ.
2) Bible thumpers. Those who believe that AIDS is the wrath of God, sent to strike down the sinners.
3) Plain Crazies. Jerry Falwell and his breathren. Ole Jerry believes that God allowed terrorists to destroy the WTC because we have turned away from him. He believes that unions, women's rights groups, gay and lesbian rights groups, and golfers are all evil. Basically, everyone who doesn't agree with his agenda is going to hell.
Should I conclude from these data points that Christianity is evil?
But you missed my point. The point is that labeling an entire religion as evil is not only morally wrong, but leads us to incorrect solutions to the problems we face. Christianity was hijacked for centuries; now, it seems that Islam is the victim. Recognizing that there is a difference between a religion and those who distort it, by viewing through the eye of history, is important in understanding our current crisis. |
