Many Americans were guilty of this attitude that everything in the world was fine before 9/11. What really happened is that we were slapped in the face with the fact that things are NOT hunky-dory in the world. There are extremists, dictators, and evildoers who are hell-bent on destroying anything they can to achieve their twisted goals.

The power balance of the world shifted when the USSR went belly up. We have been thrust into the position of global stabilizing power. As more and more nations become nuclear, and weapons of mass destruction become more available, we need to have more involvement and responsibility in the stability of global affairs. We cannot just build a huge wall around the USA and hope no one lobs megatons our way. We didn't ask for the job, but it's ours, being the last of the superpowers.
