>> All down hill from 1846? You've got to be kidding! <<

well then i suppose you wouldn't agree with me that america has been in decline since the 1960's.

>> The next 90 years, the British remained the worlds most dominant military power and financial center. <<

i don't agree with this statement, but i will meet you a little more than half way. i believe britain was dominant enough so that even as they were in decline they still were ahead of others. america has been in decline for around 35-40 years but it hasn't progressed to the point where our military or economic might is challenged. all i am saying is the seeds of destruction were sown around the mid 19th century. the flower didn't fully bloom until the great war. it probably takes 50 years or so after the culture begins to rapidly deteriorate before it is plainly evident.

>> The fact that such a relatively small and isolated nation <<

i think isolated is a poor word to describe the british empire. they were anything but isolated.

>> could maintain such dominance over the world scene for so long is amazing. <<

i don't dispute this. it still doesn't change what i said.

>> Do you think if Britain had kept protectionist laws, that it would have then been able to hold back the economic power of the United States? <<

i believe that no empire can thrive indefinitely. i do believe that a morally grounded conservative culture can delay the inevitable, but not prevent it.
