In 1997, there were 32,166 deaths by firearms in the US. Of those, 17,566 were deemed 'suicides', 13,252 were homicides, 981 were accidents, 367 were undetermined. Almost a thousand a year; more if you throw in the ones where they could not determine. Based on that Enron executive, I'd assume that more than a few 'suicides' were actually homicides, but that's a different discussion.
