HI Monty; Here is a link to the rest of the story steamradio.com I've been "on the river recently" and not posting much, THANX for that link ; and no it was not me ( thank God )..that had to be as embarrassing as it was scary. ------------- I learned some years ago in that kind of current to "back through a bridge" Hit the bank early let her swing around and then use the current to walk the boat and slowly let it take you down through the bridge facing into the current. ------------ I almost learned it the hard way :-) however God smiled on me at the time..I just managed to lift my stern ( by inches ) off a chemical dock in such a current ..( I was smoking 15kts & sliding sideways like a bandit; so hooked up and hard over I just miss the dock , ) I knew in lifting my stern my lead barge was going to hit the bank but at least south of the dock. When it did hit the bank the current spun me around and I backed out a bit but was then facing up stream..( A bridge was 1 mile down stream and I knew I couldn't get turned back around in time , much to my delight I found I could go backwards with very good control, the bridge tender freked out when I told him I was backing through, but was amazed after he saw me do it..right through the middel.. I was pushing ahead but thanks to the current the tow was backing up, and I did it with an old single scew tow boat. Jim .
