Okay, back to some of these posts(while I search for inspiration) I meant to address last time.
Actually, one of the kilns is inside of an old barn.. which seems kind of scary,
I can surely tell you aboput being nervous firing a big kiln which consumes such an amount of energy. Actually, that is the primary reason I moved my kiln from my house. It was in a "florida room" attached to the back of my garage. Ceiling was only like 7' high with a roof only having about a 15 degree angle. I had to cut through the inter ceiling to get an extra foot or so of pitch. The hood should be at a 45 angle but mine was barely at13 degrees! It was only aboout2 feet in height(max) and when I'd fire it, part of the hood would begin to buckle under the heat!!! I wouldn't fire it w/out a couple friends there, never really got to reach a good temp and soak it there for the required time. Always had a garden hose on the roof outside(just in case) and my heart rate would probably be going 200BPM during peek firing.
It was a freaking fire hazard if I ever saw one. And I didn't have home insurance at the time. I don't know how I convinced the gas company to increase my volume. It just amazes me how I did that. But One thing I've learned in this life(or maybe just a carry over from a previous one) is that I respect fire to a very large degree. I also have a very keen sense of smell, and can smell fire burning, detect what is burning(ie plastic wires-electric) or wood, what ever)
Now my set up is much safer, but I strill experience an increased heart beat while firing up to maturing temps. That I doubt I'll ever get over, but it is a good thing.
As far as the kins go, since this post, youve moved to the idea of a bank kiln. As I've mentioned I've no experience there so I am anxious to see your progress there. I hope you will post your progress here so we can all learn form it.
Okay, break is over. I will WORK!!!! :)))) |
