Ben Cheever, I believe, is the son of the writer John Cheever.

Yes. He's very likable. He's been talking about being a writer and the son of a writer and having status but little money. He's mostly supported by his wife and has had some crummy jobs. The point of the discussion is how it feels to be a low status, low paid worker--how it strips one's dignity. He's very open and self effacing as he talks. They all are. You can see that they all have an appreciation the difference between having status and not having status with no prospects of getting any.

Of course, the world view of the speakers is very demolib pinhead...
