I believe approx. 50% of firearm deaths are suicides.

Aren't Innocent People Killed by Stray Bullets?

It is true that innocent people are sometimes killed by stray bullets. But does this
mean that everyone should be deprived of their right to keep and bear arms?

The vast majority of stray-bullet shootings are caused by criminals who use guns
with evil intent. Should you surrender your right to defend your home and family
because outlaws have misused those same rights?

A man yells "Fire!" in a crowded theater which is not burning; twenty people are
killed in the stampede for the exits. Should the First Amendment be curtailed for
all because of this misuse of free speech by one?

Criminals use baseball bats, knives, fireplace pokers and bricks to kill their
victims. Does this mean these items should be banned?

Innocent people are shot far more often by police than by armed citizens. According
to a nationwide study by the St. Louis University School of Law, 11% of police
shootings involve innocents misidentified as criminals, while only 2% of civilian
shootings make the same mistake.

Should the police therefore be disarmed?

For all of these questions, the answer is "No."

The blame for stray bullet shootings belongs on the criminals who use guns
illegally. Disarming the public will only give trigger-happy predators free reign.
And those who might have been stopped by an armed citizen response will live to
kill another day.
