>> Well 30 miles of Warships cost more then a few sacks of wheat to run. Britain's empire was built on commerce and trade. The navel review of just the "Home Fleet" is proof of how powerful free trade had made her. Well that and lots of big guns. <<

hmm. well if free trade made britain so mighty, and if free trade leads to greater discourse and unity among nations, then why is it britain "did not have a friend in the world, and indeed some countries positively hated us."

doesn't that sound just like the united states of today? the center of world commerce, and at the height of military supremacy? yet we don't have many friends in this world and some countries positively hate us. sounds to me like we are following the path britain took lock stock and barrel. britain rose to prominence under protectionism, then turned to free trade and imperialism and overextended her empire to the point of collapse. the united states rose to prominence under protectionism, turned to global hegemony and free trade--overextending ourselves. for the time being it seems we are at the height of our power and influence, although we have fostered many enemies, just like britain had.

looks to me like we are right on schedule for our empire to come crashing down.
